The chaotic traffic situation in Abuja city is
compounded by
the deadly
menace of commercial motor-cyclists popularly known as "Okada" or
"Going". Every hour, there are accidents involving Okada riders; every
day, some Okada riders and their unfortunate passengers break their
limbs or knock their heads on the road.
A visit to the hospitals in the city gives a more
vivid and terrifying
picture of the incessant
danger and loss of life on the road as people with broken limbs and
heads soaked in blood writhe in pains. Some of the causes of these
avoidable bodily injuries and loss of life are the complete disregard
of the traffic code and the reckleeness with which both motorists and
Okada riders ply the road. Even pedestrains face the same serious
danger.
Okada appears to be a necessary evil. It has
now become an indispensable part of the transportation system not only
in Abuja but
also in almost all parts of Nigeria. In spite of the serious danger
associated with Okad, it must be admitted that they have come to stay
with us and unless any reasonable and durable alternatives are
available, the current situation is likely to continue.
But as we wait for the alternatives, something must be done to
save lives and
avoid some injuries and the concomitant loss of property associated
with road accidents. Step two and three of the project will feature
Cushion and Defensive Driving Programme for commercial and school bus
drivers.
